I believe that the primary purpose of academic education in the social sciences, particularly in economics, is to enable students to become proficient users of relevant theories and methods within the field, while also developing into morally responsible citizens in an increasingly globalized world.
Students should be encouraged to become active learners who are competent in acquiring knowledge and best practices independently. They should therefore be aided in developing problem-solving strategies for the questions at hand. I believe this is best achieved through a fruitful back-and-forth between theory and practice, as well as individual learning and learning with and from others with diverse backgrounds. Additionally, academic education should prepare students to be responsible decision-makers who can address societally relevant challenges, such as sustainability, AI, and immigration, in their professional careers.Â
